When it comes to water damage, of any type, the basic idea
is universal. Get the water out and dry
everything up. That is the only way to
fix it and the surefire only way to avoid future problems. It doesn’t matter if it is a minor problem or
a major disaster, the same rules still apply.
When do you begin water damage restoration? As soon as humanly possible. Start by locating the source of the water and
shutting it off. This not only minimizes
the damage as much as possible, but also tells you what kind of water you are
dealing with, if there are contaminants involved, etc.
Make sure to shut off the electricity and gas to the
structure. Do this even if all power has
been knocked out. It is best to be able
to control when the utilities come back on, for the sake of safety.
Remove all loose items, furniture, electrical appliances,
etc. They can be cleaned and repaired
elsewhere. Always remember to wear
protective clothing when working in and around flood waters. You should have waterproof boots, rubber
gloves, and protective eyewear.
You will begin by removing the excess water from the
affected area. Wet-dry vacuum units may
be utilized for this, or for more severe spills, use gas powered submersible
pumps. You will be able to remove most
of the water this way.
While things may appear dry following extraction, a touch to
the surface will reveal that they are not.
Finish the drying process by circulating as much air as possible. Open windows and doors, and use fans and blowers
to speed things along. Allow a day or
two for compete drying.
